Saturday 28th May
Tuscany to Positano with a 2 hour
stopover at Hadrian’s Villa, near Tivoli.
Oh, how sad to leave beautiful Tuscany. Two cars, two families, baby Emma fed and
ready for a 5 hour drive, and now for a completely different perspective of
Italy…the south…
A stop at Tivoli for a visit to Hadrian’s Villa
(well really it was a little plot on over 250 acres) with what was once a
Palace, a teatro, baths, a few temples, huge pools with Greek goddess statutes,
libraries, a flushing toilet…you know, all the usual trappings...Hadrian got a
bit tired of his villa in Rome way back in the 2°C so he built this Summer villa in
120-140AD about 18 miles away. It had
all the trappings of inestimable wealth – exhausting to walk around. We’re starting to get a bit of “ancient
building” exhaustion … already… hope there’s a pill you can take for that!
Driving past Mt Vesuvius, past Pompeii in the
distance and once through Sorrento we’ve entered the drive along the famous Amalfi
Coast. It’s a world of maniac drivers
and motor cycles all trying to emulate the famous James Bond car chase filmed
somewhere near here on the cliffs. It’s
not a drive for the fainthearted - buses and trucks try to squeeze through
impossibly narrow spaces whilst motor cycles try to overtake in the worst
possible situations….and then the final hairpin bends down that famous cliff
face into colourful Positano. How do you
describe this place? Amazing, stunning,
picturesque…
