Saturday 21 May
Lüscherz to Cortona, Italy via the Gotthard Tunnel near Interlaken.
Driving the freeways of Italy is a world apart from doing the
same thing in Suisse…more traffic, more intense, more flexibility with
interpreting road rules…bit like driving in the western ‘burbs of Melbourne,
really…so Jimbo was a sweaty, blithering wreck when we arrived at our meeting
place, the Chiessa del S’to Angelo, about 4km out of Cortona, surrounded by
preparations for a 3.30pm local wedding, whilst we waited for our Brisvegas
mates to show up from their yachting trip off Croatia! It all went like clockwork and by 4pm we were
installed in our Villa Melody for a week of wallowing under the Tuscan
sun…hmmm, there’s a book there somewhere…thus beginneth a week of old fortified
hilltop towns, languorous lunches, warm hazy evenings surrounded by olive
groves on our hill overlooking Lago Tresimeno where, as you will all recall
from 3rd form history, is where Hannibal, supported by his
elephants, routed the Romans! We’ve been
blessed with perfect weather, pre-season crowds, and great scout work on the
part of Danida who locked in a lovely base for our Tuscan week!
