Seeing Texas as a Traveler

USA | Thursday, 19 February 2015 | Views [237]

Hometown (and home state) is different when viewed with different eyes.  Billboards can even be interesting as in:

Don't text and drive, we can wait." Lucas Funeral Home. Admirable.

"Welcome to the Church of Uncertain". As is the City Of, but is that similar to Unitarian or New Age?

And church in Longview as a cultural visitor can be surprisingly fun, even if lost in the new syncopated rhythms to the old tunes, and especially the new ones,

"I found me a solid Rock

When I found Christ"

Plus we found the little Shady Glade Cafe tucked away in a peninsula on Caddo Lake in Uncertain. No chips and salsa, but fried pickles.  And astounding cole slaw to amaze the most jaded of lovers of uncooked cabbage. The secret recipe was slipped under the door in an envelope, inherited from the old burned-down Pine Tree Restaurant.  They also have American- raised catfish, a hint of pepper in the hush puppies make this hidden place special for the visitor.
