Day of the Dead and Santa Maria del Rio

My first month in Mexico is completed now.  I've not been working so hard and I'm still waiting for my schedule to truly fill up.  I'm moving house on Saturday, which is something to look forward to except for all the furniture i now have to buy.  The new house is brand new and close to school and cheaper than where i'm living now, so it seems like a good deal...

I was here for Day of the Dead and visited some shrines and a presentation by some high school students in the town centre which was interesting.  I never expected the shrines to be so big and for 15 year olds to have worked so hard on making them so beautiful!

On Sunday I visited Santa Maria del Rio, a small town about 45 mins from San Luis Potosi which is well known for its craft shops and for being quite pretty.  I felt like i was in Mexico for the first time!  It was just like the pictures - colourful and a bit disorganised but pretty at the same time.  After living on an industrial estate next to a very modern shopping mall for a month I'd kind of forgotten about what I'd expected Mexico to be like and Santa Maria brought all those ideas back again.  San Luis itself is quite a modern town albeit with colonial archtecture, but it's smart and tidy and not what I thought Mexico would be at all  I bought some little hand woven butterflies from a stall to decorate my new bedroom with on saturday as the town is well known for its woven goods and scarves.

So one month down, many more to go.  My Spanish is still quite rubbish.
