Started the day at the Heroes square which celebrates those who founded Hungary in the 9th century. It is a great statue but I must say the 7 leaders look like serious elders from Lord of the Rings. From there we went to the Vajdahunyad castle which is an agricultural museum. The museum was interesting but the building was amazing. The castle has three wings – one Baroque, one Gothic and one Romanesque so from a distance it looks quite bizarre. But up close you can only see one bit at a time. Went up to the Liberty statue and citadel at the highest point of Buda, wandering down through the Gellert statue gardens, and across the Elizabeth bridge. We then went on a boat trip down the Danube. You can see most of Budapest’s major landmarks from the river, so the views were good. I always enjoy boat tours when we find them. Our final excursion for the day was a night bus tour. Budapest is very pretty by night – the major landmarks (particularly the Castle, the Parliament and Matthias Church) are lit up beautifully. The weather is continuing to impress with warm sunny days. Our only criticism is that is it quite smoggy here.
