Single Serve Friends

CZECH REPUBLIC | Tuesday, 28 July 2015 | Views [565]

Yesterday, while waiting for the excursion to the Terezin Concentration Camp to start, I was talking to some ladies from Sweeden who we're also going  on the excursion. I mentioned that I was staying at largely at hostels. She mentioned that hostels we're a great place to meet "Single serve friends".  I haven't heard that expression before, and I was intrigued. Who we're single serve friends? People you use for something, lovers on one night stands?

No and no. Apparently, these are people you hang out with for a short period of time, such as hours. The example she gave was she was seated next to a stranger on an airplane who she talked to for an entire 8 hour flight, and then the parted ways never to speak/see each other again.

Sort of a depressing term, particualrly for all the Hallmark cards/Facebook posts that says "Friendship is forever", or "good friends are family members that aren't related". Single serve friends sounds to be the antithesis of this. Yet,  nearly 3 months into this journey, I have met maybe 50 people who fit that description. People I have joined for dinner, a drink, etc, who I will  proably not talk to or see again. Some are friends on Facebook, which at least means there is some (loose) promise for future contact.
