Well yesterday was my first day in Manchester, UK. I have never been here, but I have been to London a few times. So you may be asking, why am I here?
Well I read about Manchester a few years ago, when I worked for Gruntal and Company, a brokerage firm. One of my favorite companies was Southwest Airlines, and they started service to Manchester, NH, and I sort of remember visiting Manchester NH with my father years ago coming back from Mt Washington.
So where does Manchester UK come in? Well, I used to fly on US Airways a lot, back when they had direct flights from Fort Lauderdale to New York, and remember getting a mailing from there (I used to think I was big shit, because I Was a card-carrying Dividend Miles memeber), saying they started new service to Manchester UK. Since they we're flying there directly from the US, there surely must be a reason to go there! Plus although I don't follow soccer, or any other sports, I have heard of the Manchester United soccer team.
Well, now I am here. Manchester is a big city-with a big airport, a downtown with a few tall buildings, and a transit network of streetcars, as well as busses and trains. But other then that, it is hard to find out what is here. I looked in a few bookstore for books on Manchester (couldn't really find any), looked for brochures at the train station, and even entered some large hotels (mine is a shit hole-so I wouldn't count on mine), looking for the ususal destination pamphlets, brochures, etc. Nope-can't find anything.
I am online (obviously), so I guess I will search here.
One place I found is MediaCity UK--which looks like where most BBC shows are filmed. I guess they we're closed-so I couldn't go in-but it looked like a cool complex (I found it, by the way-by looking on a Streetcar map and found "MediaCity UK".
I walked around-it is actually large and beautiful, it even has a lawn out front for buying drinks, and sitting in a relaxing chair.
