Norway's second largest city has a small town feel despite its bustling port. Bryggen, the wharf area, sports sixty (some claim as many as 80) charming wooden houses that lean drunkenly on each other, part of yet another World Heritage site. It reminded us a little of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
Bryggen, a bit like Lunenburg
We wandered around all day, switching from raincoats to sunglasses more time than we could count. We returned to the ship for lunch then ventured out again, only to learn that the highly touted art museum was closed for renovation. At the thriving fish market we finally saw real lutefiske, that acquired taste that Garrison Keillor makes so many jokes about. One of the fishmongers offered me smoked whale meat which really pissed me off. I had forgotten that Norway, like Japan, still feels it is necessary to kill whales. Shame on them! So part protest, part necessity, we changed all of our kroner into euros.
Better lutefiske than whale!
