made it to Guatemala!!

GUATEMALA | Tuesday, 20 July 2010 | Views [561]

We flew into Guatemala last night. There was a man waiting outside the airport with a sign with Brett´s name on it to help us find our ride to the hostel. Brett loved having his name on a sign. Right away I realized how rusty my Spanish was while trying to communicate with our driver that didn´t speak English. As we drove into the city we were both surprised by the number of American restaurants in the city. Everything from McDonalds to KFC.

We arrived at our hotel called Hotel Ajau in Zone 1 of the city, right near all the action. For the price it´s a nice place. Big, colorful walls, clean tile floors and most importantly only $14 a night for the two of us. After putting our backpacks away and convincing Brett that we should not order Dominos and that we should try to get some authentic food, we cruised down a couple doors to the little restaurant that our hotel attendant recommended we try. There were a few tables in a tiny room and the place was run by a family. The mom in the kitchen cooking and the young daughter waiting on us. The only thing I´m going to have to get used to is their style of beans. They are like pureed black beans, kind of tasty but you could definitely drink your beans if you wanted to. After dinner and on the way back to the hotel, we bought a couple of beers at a tiny shop. The owner of the shop had invited over some friends and they were sitting around playing cards. All in all it was an interesting night and a great welcome to Guatemala City.

Today we are feeling much revived after sleeping for 11 hours in our hostel. I´m sure these people think we are the laziest people in the world, but it was much needed after our two hours of sleep the night before trying to prepare for our trip. After an amazing breakfast, we are now all packed up and about to head to Antigua. I better go because our taxi will be arriving in a couple of minutes. We will report on our new city soon!
