Thailand 2017 - Bangkok and Kanchanaburi

Thailand | Thursday, November 9, 2017 | 62 photos

Well, you'd think after a few days back in Bangkok and we'd be fleeing from the pungent sewer gases puffing through the sidewalk grates and the traffic churning through the alleys to avoid ubiquitous street congestion, but sizzling pork skewers on every sidewalk and temple incense streaming from this wat and that wat seem to charm the senses. Bangkok still has bad breath but the masses are now wexting and texting and cafes are sprouting from the ashes of street kitchens. More visited than Paris and London, this city of angels is pressing forward into the inevitable gentrification that blurs character from whatever it touches. We've been in and out of this foodivore city for two weeks now, with a fabulous sidetrip by third-class train to Kanchanaburi, where a riverside resort captivated us as the bridge over the River Kwai captivated the rest.

Goodbye Bangkok. Thanks for sharing Loy Krathong at Chatuchak lake where families and couples and friends happily lit their krathongs to float away with their burdens and their offerings for plentiful and clean water, for allowing us into your mourning for the beloved king, for spicy mango salads, for beautiful Wat Pho and its reclining Buddha, and also the breathtaking Wat Arun on the river Chao Phraya. We came for the dentistry and pad thai but we leave with much more.
