This is the day we've been waiting for, the day we get to go on our first African Safari! We get picked up from the hostel at around 9am, we're the first in the van and we meet George, our driver and safari guide. We head downtown to pick up another couple, the Indians, as George calls them. (Is that politically correct, George?) First we pick up a guy named Aziz, he gets into the van speaking Swahili and I'm thinking, great were travelling 5 hours with a couple who dont speak English. But this thought is short lived because we then pick up his wife, Bobbi, from her office and she gets in speaking English. She's energetic and funny and now I'm thinking, this'll be a good trip. (turns out Aziz speaks English too and his Swahili comes in very handy later in the trip)
So the drive begins and within 30 min. we wish it would end. I've been on some bad roads before, but this is by far the worse road I've ever been on! The paved road out of Nairobi ends and the dirt/pot-holed/none existint path begins and we have to do everything we can to stay in our seats and stop our heads from hitting the ceiling! Why does noone ever mention this 5 hour headache when they talk about going to the Mara??? If we ever get an opportunity to go back to the Masai Mara, we will fly.
