Week 5: Clothes maketh the man

UNITED KINGDOM | Sunday, 24 April 2011 | Views [581]

Last year at the CA christmas party it struck me how similar all accountants looked. Well the females at least because all businessmen everywhere around the world just seem to wear suits.  And it wasn’t just the clothes, nearly all the females there were wearing glasses (I was glad I’d left mine at home!) and had their hair done up in a similar manner. Now that I’m working in the hospitality industry, I can’t comment on the clothes and the hair anymore since each area has to wear a certain uniform and tie their hair a certain way which makes them all look the same.

This week was the first time I was ‘Lobby Hostess’ at Claridge’s, which pretty much means I had to stand in the lobby (marble floor in heels for up to 11 hours) and greet people. And it’s not just accountants that look the same it’s also the rich and the snooty. The rich seem to dress their sons in exactly the same clothes even though they may be different ages, the younger boys all seem to have shoulder length curly hair as do all the little girls and the women are all incredibly skinny. I’ve never seen such skinny females in my entire life! Though it’s no wonder when they spend their days shopping and coming back to the hotel with a huge number of shopping bags. At least most of the bags are made of paper so they can be recycled!

And people who work in the fashion industry try to dress differently to everyone else but I think they all look the same because they’re all trying to stand out, whether it is their hair style or clothing. Movie directors seem to love wearing sunnies of a certain shape and the older people who look like they’ve had money for their whole life all wear suits. My favourite people are the ones that wear jeans and t-shirts because I can’t guess what they are and they always seem to a lot more friendly than any other group.

I didn’t have much time to be a tourist this week, but I did manage to go to the Tower of London as my Historical Royal Palaces membership came through. (So worth the money if you’re into that sort of thing!) I saw the Crown Jewels (I feel sorry for the queen because most of those crowns seem really heavy with all those diamonds and gemstones on them) and the armour exhibition (I’m quite surprised how small a lot of the past kings of England were.) It’s just amazing being there and realising how long it structure has been around for and the numerous people that have lived in the walls. Definitely something worth going to in London!
