Week 2: Starting to feel like a local

UNITED KINGDOM | Monday, 28 March 2011 | Views [481] | Comments [2]

Finally, after almost two weeks I started to feel like a local because I paid for groceries without spending five seconds trying to read the values of each coin before I handed them over! So exciting!

So the focus of this week was working as a caterer. It hasn't been too excessively horrible; apart from my first shift which was almost 12 hours with only a 15 minute break. I was in tears by the end just from the pure exhaustion of standing for such a long period of time in shoes that seemed to get tighter as time passed on it's slow ambling way.

At least now I have a box of plasters (band-aids) in my bag, to reduce the pain somewhat. And I'm going to remember to wear comfortable shoes to work so at least I'm not limping down the hard concrete london streets to get to the tube station. We live and we learn.

The places I've worked have been quite nice. I did a shift at Clariges, a fancy hotel where the only way you can tell the difference between the staff and the guests are that the guests dress casually and the staff are dressed to the nines. Even the security guards are dressed in tail coats! It's quite ridiculous. Oh yeah, supposedly really famous and rich people stay there. Justin Beiber was there for the last couple of weeks, no doubt being watched by security guards in tail coats.

I also did a shift at the Berkley, quite a nice place though I only got to see the conference rooms and the ballroom and Green's a lovely little oyster bar with the most delicious smelling food and a georgous little function room with bookshelves painted on the walls.

So as I mentioned before I've come from a well paid full time job to working excessive hours in a casual job that pays minimum wage and I'm finding that I don't mind it as much as I thought I would.
