Frogger

CAMBODIA | Tuesday, 21 December 2010 | Views [127] | Comments [2]

One of my goals at the moment is to get to know the city of Phnom Penh and find accommodation. This is all easier said then done. I feel like I am a little child again having to relearn how to do everything.

Take for example the task of crossing the road. First they drive on the other side of the road....ok that's easy look right first then left.....but they also drive all over the place. It is like fish swimming in the ocean, no real order to it just where there is an empty space a moto, car, tuktuk etc will be. Being the one on foot I am the lowest on the road food chain. Not only do I have to look right then left but also diagonally in front and behind. It is all about crossing a road with complete confidence. If you pause or step back for a moment that is when you will be squished.

When I get some language and more confidence I shall switch to moto taxi....but for now it is the daily frogger as I walk from where I'm staying (near the Russian Markets) to church. At least the weather is cool for walking and it is a far from boring daily task.

Oh to cross the road like Karen...now that's the dream - haha

The walk is 30 minutes if I walk fast (and I did that on Tuesday morning for prayer time) but 40 minutes is the usual time. You do arrive a bit hot and a take having a tomato face to a whole new level. But walking is cheap.
