    Views[424] Views[332] On the streets of Hanoi ~ just SO excited to be wearing what we called 'real' clothes for the first time in ages. Views[387] Views[449] Just getting ready to board our boat ~ with a huge jar of cashews and plans to drink a few bottles of wine onboard, we're pretty excited. Views[896]
     
    At the Water Puppet Theatre ~ where they inexplicably hand out paper fans along with the program. A nice touch, I guess. Views[472] On Cat Ba Island ~ just goofing off and killing time before dinner. Views[589] Also on Cat Ba Island ~ these kids were chucking business cards over the railing, and watching them flutter into the sea. Hannah and I figured they'd been paid to distribute the flyers, and then decided just to dump them. Ha. Views[658] On the streets of Hanoi, 'taking over' for a pineapple vendor. After this, I felt obliged to buy...! Views[452] The ACTUAL fruit vendor. (she does a way better job balancing than i did...!) Views[455]
     
    Outside what was nicknamed the Outside the Canadian Embassy in Hanoi, my last day in Vietnam. I left that afternoon for Beijing ~ 44 hours on the train. Views[908] Waiting in line at Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum....this was the last day in Vietnam for both Hannah and I. (she was headed to Bangkok, I was headed to Beijing...) Views[525] The lineup outside Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum. It moves really quickly though, since no one is allowed to linger as you file past his body. The entire procession took about 40min from start to finish. Views[422] Something I liked on the side of a bus in Hanoi. Views[415]

The roads were steep ~ to the point where we often had to walk our bikes up the hills.....honestly. The blame probably lies equally shared between the crappy bikes, the awful shape we're in, and the hills themselves. Ah well. It was gorgeous though ~ all misty peaks and mountain goats and emerald water. Views[702] Dinner ~ mmmmm, WINE ~ on the boat with Claire and Brendon. MOM ~ fyi ~ this is the couple I fwd. the cookie recipe to! Views[627] Kayaking in Halong Bay with Hannah. The only photo I have of this event ~ I'm hoping Hannah will send some of hers to me.     Our boat stopped so we could explore some amazing, other-worldly caves ~ all lit up with spotlights and such. Walking back to the boat after, we were assaulted by the sales pitches of numerous vendors, who had docked along the pier and were selling everything from oranges to oreos. Views[548] Hannah and I outside of the caves...Halong Bay stretches out beneath us. Views[544] Climbing the steep stairs up from our boat to the caves, I stopped to take a picture of the Bay far below. Views[587] Hannah and I, bundled up against the cold, on the boat in Halong Bay.     The limestone peaks of Halong Bay are in the background of this shot. Views[470] Hannah on her moto, riding through the Old Quarter. Views[686] Riding through the streets of the Old Quarter in Hanoi ~ something I definately miss. Views[382] Posing with a...dragon? lion? its your call.... at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi. Views[456] Again, at the Temple of Literature. It was an alternately misty and rainy day ~ we felt we needed to buy hats to combat the rain. Views[441]
     
    Views[444] Views[390] Views[418] Posing with a warrior statue guarding one of the Emperor's tombs in Hue. Views[489] Standing on the edge of the lake surrounding one of the tombs. This particular tomb was built by the Emperor before his death, for use during his life as a sort of Summmer Palace, where he could frolic with his concubines and do some fishing and hunting (on a PATHETICALLY small game island ~ would have been like shooting fish in a barrel).     Me at China Beach. Another self-portrait, I know. But I feel like I'm getting to be a pro at taking them!! Views[495] Taken from the top of one of the Marble Mountains, which are huge marble outcroppings along the coast of Vietnam. Each of the 5 mountains is said to represent a different element ~ earth, fire, metal, wind, and.....? i forget. i'll get back to this one, i guess! haah. Views[509] China Beach ~ just outside of Danang. It was very cold and windy when we were there, so we only stopped for a few minutes to take some pictures. But despite the weather, the beach to the right of this photo was packed with picnic-ing families, dogs playing in the surf, and couples snuggled into blankets to watch the waves. Views[959] This was taken 'inside' the Forbidden Purple City. The complex was almost completely ruined by American bombing during the war, and now the empty land is used mostly to grow veggies and such. The structure in the background houses a theatre, where I saw some traditional Vietnamese fan and lantern dances. Views[490] Just inside the walls of the Citadel in Hue, there were elephant rides on offer. Such an odd sight....behind me, there are about 4 other elephants hanging out in a field, as well. FYI, the entrance to the Forbidden Purple City (or what remains of it) can barely be seen off in the distance. Views[768]
     
    This is the building where the Emperor would receive important dignitaries and other such official guests. Once you walk out back, you end up facing the demolished 'entrance' to the FPC dead on. Views[401] The bridge leading in towards the FPC spans a massive goldfish pond. For a few thousand dong, you can create havoc with a handful of fish food ~ as shown here. Views[677] The massive flag tower in front of the Citadel. I love the children doing their exercises beneath the Vietnamese flag! Views[423] Hannah and I aboard a crazy jeep ride through the My Son temple ruin complex ~ apparently, this service is provided when the torrential rains start, haha. Views[571] One of the pathways leading around the Cham ruins at My Son. You can see what extreme sleep deprivation can do to a person!! Views[546]
     
    Hannah and I ~ we're running on no sleep, having stayed up all night to ensure we made the 5am bus to the My Son Cham ruins outside of Hoi An. Pretty soon after this shot was taken, it started to rain...a STELLAR day. Views[534] A Vietnamese woman displays her fresh veggies for sale along the town market lane ~ such a colourful street. Views[565] Along the riverbank in Hoi An. This is where we liked to wander ~ when we weren't otherwise occupied with fittings, selecting fabrics, and generally spending WAY too much money.... Views[532] The entire town was getting ready for their lunar New Years celebration when Hannah and I arrived. This meant flags and lanterns everywhere, huge crowds, and a general air of celebratory giddiness. Views[412] Colourful Vietnamese flags line the historic streets of Hoi An. Views[472]

    Me at CKS Intl. Airport, very bored. I was there from about 12midnight until my flight to Singapore, about 7am. Ha ha, and also ~ you can see up my nose! (but I still like this pic....)
