    Me at the bar...can you tell I've had a few? Ok, only one. But those who know me, know thats enough!!! Views[464] Liz and Mike, 2/3 of the motorcycling expedition we launched, in and around Pai. Views[409] There are tons of these Lisu vendors set up all along the banks of the lake in town. Yes, I did buy a lot of stuff from them...so colourful and so cheap...and they really pull the guilt trip on you ~ 'you buy so I can eat..?????' Sheesh. Views[454] The woman of the house, in the first village we stayed in on the trek. She was definately in charge...she carried a little whipping stick, and the dogs, cats, pigs ~ they all knew she was the boss, because she wasn't afraid to use it!! Views[457] I just loved taking pictures of this woman. So colourful, and I loved the lines on her face. I really wished the language barrier wasn't so...high!!!! I'm positive she would have interesting stories to tell. Views[373]
     
    Ah, the railing. The water LOOKS calm on the surface, but it was next to impossible to keep your feet from being swept out from under you. Just another reason why you NEED a guide...we had all been convinced that a railing was a ridiculous paranoia....how wrong we were. Without it, I think I'd stil be swimming that river!! Views[392] Our porter with a length of bamboo, cut especially to make a 'railing' of sorts so we could cross the river. Views[365] Lunch the third (and final) day of trekking. Again, I was glad to be veggie...Audrey and Matthieu were saddled with cans of mystery meat to go with their rice. Views[390] Well, we made it.     Lookin real purty...about midway through the trek. Although...I DO look awfully pleased with myself! Views[382] One of the men in the Karen village. Can these guys EVER put back that rice whiskey!!! Views[410] Me eating lunch. Last day of the trek...we were about 3 hours away from a ride back into Mae Hong Son!! Views[404] My leech bite. It just needed to be documented. Views[509] We were stopped in the middle of a rice paddy. Picturesque at the time. Later, I was told rice paddies are the number one place to find..yes,...king cobras. Fun. Views[372]
     
    Our guide, mid-trek. What an interesting, crazy life he has led so far! Views[355] Demonstrating the skills he learned from American GIs during the war. He worked at the American embassy in Laos when he was 19 ~ then became a buddhist monk for 28 years 'for rest'. Some long rest. Views[345] Feeding the piglets.     She's finished feeding the pigs...I've never heard anything so loud in my life...squealing, snorting, wierd barking sounds...and every now and then, the swish of the whip as she maintained an ordered chaos. Views[352] After our first night in the Karen village, we woke up to all sorts of people coming by to say hi to the guides, and smile real BIG at us! There were only 3 of us on the trek, so we were really made to feel like we were welcome....Burmese cigars, rice whiskey, and Thai massage all 'round! Views[428] A section of the road leading to the Padeung village. It crossed about 9 shallow rivers, and the only traffic I encountered in the other lane was an elephant. You know you're not in Canada when.....!! Views[367] Both of the porters, at the first rest break. Here they handed us packets of rice wrapped in banana leaf, and mandarin oranges, and then proceeded to catch 3-4 crabs (or what LOOKED like crabs..)from the river, to cook for themselves! Views[439] We started the trek with 2 porters and a guide...but one of the porters dropped out once we had eaten half the food, drank half the whiskey, etc. (half as much to carry, now!) This guy stayed the long haul with us, and was amazing. Views[521]
     
    A Padeung woman (also known as the long-neck Karen tribe) peddling her wares in the village. The village was about 20 min. by motorbike, northwest of Mae Hong Son....meaning, precariously close to the Burmese border. Views[5430] An old man explaining a puzzle game...think rubix cube-esque, but with string and wood. Yeah, confusing. Taken on the first night of my trek, from a Karen hill tribe village, about 6.5 hours hike into the jungle. I think my favourite thing about this pic is the cats grooming each other in the background, staying close to the cooking fire for warmth! Views[633] More Padeung people. They are refugees from Myanmar (Burma) and the 250baht entrance fee to the village, while it feels rather exploitative, goes a long way to support the families living in the village. Views[320] So, even in the depths of the Thai jungle, Maggi is the seasoning of choice. And I thought it was a german thing??? Views[999]
     
    Once these youngsters arrived with fresh produce, all the women in the village rushed out to get first pick. Views[348] Apparently the rings don't actually EXTEND the neck..but rather, they push the shoulder muscles down, and rest upon the ribs. It distorts the musculature of the body, rather than the skeleton, thus creating the illusion of a longer neck. Views[286] Another cute little one in the Padeung village. Views[344] One of the porters, offering us a fresh lemon he has just knocked out of the tree with his bamboo hiking stick. Views[283] As protection against leeches while trekking, our porters soaked tobacco with river water, and then soaked our shoes and socks with the resulting brew. Its meant to kill them once they touch it, but one made it to my ankle...the resulting bite is sure to leave a scar...! Views[1146]

Views[604] This pic, I took for my dad. The Padeung people were selling hot chili peppers and Burmese cigars....if you know my dad, you know this is HIS thing. Views[384] My first night in Mae Hong Son, I got stuck at a little restaurant along the (ONE) main strip while it poured rain. So many people were driving by on motorbikes, carrying umbrellas...crazy. Views[398] Fruit trees ringing the lake in Mae Hong Son yield some pretty big fruit. Dunno what it is though.     The bathroom in the Karen village. Down stairs, over stream of muck (kitchen scrap, waste water etc) and into a little dirt/mud floor hut. Um, basically a hole in the floor!!! Views[382] Two cats in the Karen hut we stayed at, on the first night of my trek. They are allowed into the 'kitchen' area...dogs are not. Here, they're gloating back at the dogs, hovering in the doorways. Views[379] William ~ best river guide, EVER. Views[452] You don't FLUSH here...just pour water down, from the bucket, afterwards.     Me at CKS Intl. Airport, very bored. I was there from about 12midnight until my flight to Singapore, about 7am. Ha ha, and also ~ you can see up my nose! (but I still like this pic....)
