    One of the villages off in the distance, where the little kids all swarmed in from!! Views[484] One of many shots of the local children, crowding around me to see their faces on the camera lcd screen...made the 2 hour bus breakdown on the way to Phonsavon bearable. Views[589] Another kid staring like mad!! Views[345] Along the way to the 3rd Jar site. Views[467] Officially my favourite place in Laos so far...Vieng Xai, where the caves of the Pathet Laos are found. Just gorgeous, and the locals were wonderful. Views[532]
     
    Sauteed green veg...finally. I think there was even broccoli in there! This restaurant in Xam Neua had rat, deer, and sparrow on the menu. To the right of the place setting is the basket that the sticky rice comes in. Views[457] The remains of a wrecked Soviet tank. Support from the USSR for the fledgling communist regime in Laos was extensive. There used to be many more such wrecks, but most have been dismantled and the scrap metal used elsewhere. Views[581] In order to get to the 3rd, and most impressive Plain of Jars site (there are over a dozen sites, but only 3 are sufficiently cleared of UXO to be visited safely) you must walk through rice paddies and grazing water buffalo. Surreal for a city girl.... Views[480] Me at the first Plain of Jars site, outside of Phonsavon. Massive stone jars, of which we know so little. Pretty impressive. Views[632] Taken while I was waiting for the guys to finish staring at the soviet tank. Dusty bumpy dirt roads led to all 3 Jar sites. (the guys, i had met up with on the bus into Phonsavon, and we split the cost of hiring the car and guide...a good day) Views[428]
     
    A little blurry. This is the rooster that I shared a bus with, from Vang Vieng to Phonsavon. When the bus broke down, he was brought outside, presumably for fresh air?? Views[458] The Lao national flag and the hammer & sickle fly proudly together, in Vieng Xai. National day is Dec 02, and there are flags flying all over the place in preparation of the 30th anniversary of the Communist takeover. Views[1244] Hanging out IN one of the jars. Getting out was a bit of a comedy show for anyone watching, I'm sure. Views[451] Another one of those shots that 'prove'I was there...this one, with a huge termite hill inadvertantly in the background as well.     A little blurry, as she's running to see all the newcomers arriving with the new 'rescue' bus. So cute... Views[397] This little girl was one of my favourites...I know I'm not supposed to say that, but.... Views[526] Now imagine about 100 of these jars scattered around. Really eery. Views[382] Another shot from the early morning at the bus depot in Phonsavon. The man has a cart of steamed dumplings, and the girls are selling baguettes to the passengers through the bus window. Views[411] While waiting for the bus to leave Phonsavon bound for Xam Neua, I noticed that the bus next to mine had a huge cage strapped to the back of it, with the cutest dog inside....don't wanna know his destiny..... You can tell by the frost on the windows how bitter cold it was in the mornings here... Views[479]
     
    Taken from the bus window en route to Xam Neua. A young girl hard at work.... Views[470] I love the little guy on the bottom left of this shot. Every time he saw his face on the camera, he dissolved into giggles. Children really are the same everywhere...I remember James and Ryan reacting the same way to the digital camera!!! Views[438] More lovely kids... Views[408] One of the thousands of US inflicted bomb craters all over the country side in the NE of laos...usually with trees growing like crazy due to the water that accumulates in the crater... Views[466] Children hang about the bus terminals selling fresh french style baguettes to passengers, about 1000kip each. Views[458]

Views[486] As we ate our foe (rice noodle soup) at the cafe at Tat Sae, a monk walked by with this HUGE leaf; I'm glad James had his camera, since my pix were among the ones stolen. Views[614] Um, a cow. Views[410] The lower pools of Tat Sae...the place is EXACTLY what fancy resorts are trying to copy, with all the different levels of waterfalls and resulting pools to swim in. Views[737] Tat Sae ~ just outside of Luang Prabang. The best place I've found yet for sunbathing..I'm dying for the beaches.... Views[694] Our last night together in Luang Prabang -although we are to meet up again 24h later in Vang Vieng....!! Views[481] Pigging out on pancakes smothered in ice cream and mango. There are about 5 different bars in Vang Vieng that play Friends dvds back to back, all day long. This is at one of them. Views[477]

Views[417] You can see the ramp on the right, for jumping off, and the swing on the left....you climb on, and everyone pulls you back until you are pretty much horizontal, and then let fly....     The second, and best, stop. This is Liz, my favourite picture of her. We got to lie out on bamboo mats and soak up the sun, while sipping shandies. (the only thing I could manage - not drinking beer is HARD in asia!!) Views[443] The first 'stop' along the river. Entrepreneurial Lao pull you in with bamboo poles, in hopes of selling you beer and convincing you to try one of the many rope swings and flying foxes out into the river. Me, Kate, and Amy. Views[453] Mike floating around at the put-in point of the Nam Song, in Vang Vieng. The beginning of a 5 hour float down the river.... Views[475] The supremely beautiful Nam Song river that runs through Vang Vieng. Views[421] The best shot - completely captures what floating down that river was like. Anyone who ever did Elora Gorge will completely identify with this....(James) Views[427]

    Me at CKS Intl. Airport, very bored. I was there from about 12midnight until my flight to Singapore, about 7am. Ha ha, and also ~ you can see up my nose! (but I still like this pic....)
