People we meet along the way during our prior travels tend to comment on obesity and fast pace/fast food culture of Americans. They refer to their travels to the US, and seeing a large proportion of overweight people. Well folks, an article in the paper today, "The West Australian" speaks of the same phenomena here as well. With all the wealth that the mining industry has brought to Western Australia, the article focuses on how West Australians are bulging from pay rises and house sales, along with bulging waistlines. They discuss all the extra dollars that are being ploughed into more alcohol, big screen TV's, and dining out, when they already consume too much alcohol, are too sedentary, and eat too much... And that many are being left behind because pay scales are not keeping pace with cost of food, housing, etc. Funny, sounds like home. In our increasingly transparent global economy, our bad habits transcend borders, countries, oceans - we are becoming one "BIG" world.
