Meet Marta Julia: Martha Stewart of Guatemalan Homestays

GUATEMALA | Sunday, 30 September 2007 | Views [4287]

After bussing it back to Antigua today, we are finally "home sweet home."  We were able to get our homestay of choice, Marta Julia, who was recommended to us by our friend Karen who we met in Vietnam.  We have our own private room with bathroom here, and it's so clean!  Our family consists of Marta Julia, a retired school teacher, her granddaughter Alejandra, who is staying with Marta to prepare for school exams, and Naya, a lovely local woman who prepares amazing meals.  There are several rooms Marta rents out to other students, which makes for lively Spanish conversation at meal time.  We're equally as jazzed with the location of our cute abode - it's right across from the Iglesia de San Francisco, and less than a two minute walk from our new school - La Union.  The homes here in Antigua lie behind big walls along the streets; we open a big gate in the wall, and slide back into a labyrinth of little casitas.  It's a whole other world behind the old street walls, so many little casitas tucked away, it's real life here, behind the walls.  We're so happy to finally be in a safe, clean, warm happy home, especially with large, nutritious and tasty meals three times a day.  We're in heaven!
