Ah, a huge sense of freedom washed over us today, as we finally ditched our campervan. It's been 20 straight days in our van, and we've had enough. While we love camping, and the freedom to stop wherever we want and cook our dinner, watch a sunset, or crash out for the night gazing at an amazing sky, we are truly sick of the nasty van... Maybe it's the layer of dirt over everything, the fridge that died a few days into our trip, and makes a noise like a jackhammer when we're sleeping, or perhaps it's just living literally in each others close proximity for 20 days that's left us exhausted. Actually, daily showers are treasured moments of alone time, where we can be completely alone, not having to talk, listen or be attentive.
We sped off to Perth, after scrubbing off all the nasty locusts’ guts from the front of the car. Checked into our next home- the Witch's Hat- popularized by Lonely Planet's write-up about their festive living areas, cappuccino machine and juicer (which of course the nice coffee maker is the only reason we selected this joint). The rooms are like brick prison cells, with a skinny little window above the bed. For $72 this is backpacker luxury. And we still have yet to find the cappuccino maker- what a rip-off! We've spent the day cleansing ourselves, and all our articles of clothing, as we enter this next stage of backpacker living. Karla and Paul Tate are flying in from Sydney tonight to holiday with us for the next 5 days, and we want to be smelling and looking fresh and clean for the big weekend! So at this point we must highlight that Karla and Paul are our first friends to take us up on the offer for friends & family to meet us anywhere along our traveling path during these 14 months, and we're really looking forward to having friends to share our Perth experience with! With so many cool pubs, restaurants, cafes and art venues, it will be a great time.
