There is a little town not too far from here that we visited yesterday. It's called St. Cado and its claim to fame is the quaint petite house that sits calmly on a tiny little island in the water with its welcoming blue shutters. Everyone who paints here has of course done their version of the cottage and all the postcard displays are filled with different views, taken on sunny days, in the rain, with morning light, afternoon brightness and as the sun sets. So, of course, one of the first things that people do when they arrive, is to whip out their cameras and start shooting photos of the cottage. I was very curious about its history, thinking that it must be something special. Not really, it is the former home of the last oyster fisherman in the town. While we were there a family took their kayaks over to the little island, ascended and checked it out, even peaking in the windows. Since they didn't stay very long, I assume that there wasn't much to look at.
Most of this area is surrounded by water and forms lots of different peninsulas and little islands. In fact, the pictures we posted are taken from another island. It's larger than the one with the little cottage: the outer circumference is .7 miles. And from one spot we were able to see the peninsula where our house is located. It's the one with the large white buildings on the tip. This is a restaurant and oyster farm down the road from our house. Pity we don't like oysters since they are very popular in this region and reasonable too. The size determines the price which is also true of fruit.
It was a about 93 degrees when we visited and the breeze walking around the island was like entering a refrigerator. I would have happily walked the .7 of a mile until the sun went down!
The cottage was worth a visit but if I had driven a couple of hours to see it, I would have been disappointed. Some website actually ranked it #2 with Etretat being their #1 choice..Different strokes for different folks. I can certainly understand their placing Etretat at the top of their list. It was one of our highlights of last summer too. But, St. Cado would definitely NOT be #2!
