Remember “1066 and All That”?

FRANCE | Friday, 8 July 2016 | Views [271]

Well in Caen, aside from the famous WWII Memorial, is the largest Chateau/Fort in all of Europe and it belonged to none other than William the Conqueror or the Duke of Normandy as he is known here.

The place is massive and now houses a few different art museums as well as the remains of the original chateau. Amazing that they could build such fortifications in 1020.

Outside the WWII Memorial Museum is a 25ft plus statue. This cast bronze sculpture resembles a photograph taken by Life magazine photographer Eisenstadt after peace was declared in the States. At this height, it can't be missed and lightens the somber atmosphere of the museum. And behind the museum is a magnificent garden park filled with over 40 acres of many different types of flowers. It was dedicated at the 50th anniversary of the D Day Landings.
