Wow! Something That Really Lived Up to Expectations

FRANCE | Monday, 4 July 2016 | Views [390] | Comments [2]

Since we have been coming here to France for some 20 years, there aren't many sites that we haven't visited. Today, we decided to drive out to one that has been on our “must see” list for quite awhile. We drove out to Etretat and it was SPECTACULAR! We parked the car, walked up to the beach, mounted the steps and there it was- the cliff and sea made so famous by Monet's well known painting. I'm not sure what we expected but what we saw was thrilling. To the left was Monet's famous cliff and to the right was another smaller one that was pretty special as well.

We took all the requisite photos. But then we wanted one of us, which wasn't easy because everyone there wants the same shot. Ed prefers to take the shots automatically but people kept walking in front of us as the camera went off. A very thoughtful French woman having lunch with friends saw what was happening and volunteered to take the picture for us!

After lunch, I decided that I wanted to try the climb up the cliff, with my trusty walking poles. Off I went. The climb up was tough in places but the poles were a great help and the views were well worth it. I was just disappointed that I didn't have the camera. Ed wanted me to take my cell phone so we could stay in touch and I just didn't have a safe place to store the camera too. There is actually a third cliff that is hidden by the “Monet Cliff” . And at the very top, there is a golf course on one side and phenomenal views of the cliffs and the channel on the other.

Leon and I were there in 2012 and indeed it is spectacular as is the hike. This formation was is the topic of a detective story called L'Aiguille Creuse which i had read years earlier so it was particularly meaningful to me.
