The little town just next to Deauville, Touques, was having its Medieval Fair last weekend and we decided to attend. We had a blast. Although we have been to some of the most famous ones in France, this little town really did quite a fine job. First, many of the buildings in the town are authentic. And the townspeople really get into the event with varying degrees of enthusiasm. We've seen the jugglers, dancers, and costumes before but there were also theater presentations at the Touques Fair. The one we particularly enjoyed was a demonstration of a “surgeon's work” during the Middle Ages. The “surgeon” was hilarious as he washed his hands (by spitting on them) before operating on a leg. Note the towns' communal washing machine, the “lavoir”. These were used in the Middle Ages and this one, built in a stream, actually has constant running water.
