Tunnel Vision

Yesterday was a nice day in Sarajevo. I took a tour from the hostel, with 4 others; a couple from Germany, a girl from Australia, and a guy from India, of the tunnel that citizens and the B&H army used to travel and transport ammunition and some food from one "safe zone" to another of the city, during the fighting of 1992 to 1995. The tunnel actually went right under the Sarajevo International Airport. Only a short portion of the tunnel was open, and the tunnel was maybe 5'5 high, so I at 5'10 had to hunch over-and solders had to carry enormously heavy backpacks the 700 meter length of the tunnel. We also saw a film of the destructions, including the bombing/shelling a landmarks I had recognized from being here.

The tour guide was also a wealth of information, he mentioned that he and his dad (he was 13 I believe) had to run across the airport runway for medical supplies for his brother-avoiding the lights of the UN security vehicles (Which would have alerted the Serbians to his presence).

It was most fascinating. The afternoon portion of the tour wasn't as interesting-I saw some point of old town which I already visited, and also the old city hall. He did take us to a cafe with a great view of the city, and at the end, we had a beer at a bar right next to the hostel. The tour started around 11:00, and it was about 5:00 pm when we finished drinking at the bar. We learned that the guy giving the tour was actually one of the owners of the hostel.

After the beer I went back to take a nap, and I went back into town. I had dinner at some Bosnian place, enjoying some burek, which is a twisty bread usually curled with meat, but in this case spinach and cheese. I also learned how to use Skype to call my girlfriend so that is an accomplishment-although the call wasn't that great quality.

I then walked through the old town back to the hostel and went to bed.
