I'd never heard of the place.
It was purely by chance that we went.
Albert and I were going to meet, for the first time, on 'neutral territory'. We’d met in Hamar, Norway, and in Barcelona, Spain. Now it was time to meet without friends or family. Just the two of us.
It couldn’t have been a better location.
Lubeck was charming. We went during the Spring for a week.
It was the first time I would arrive at an airport without a pick up. I arrived at Hamburg airport, and took a bus and a train. It was a lot easier than I expected. The airport had a lot of signs and the people were reserved but helpful.
Albert had arrived earlier in the day and met me at the train station. He looked tall. His hair was flying all over the place. He was searching each carriage, and once he saw me, it was only moments until he was hugging me.
Our apartment was just charming in the most pretty quarter of Lubeck. We literally had hordes of tours streaming past our windows oohing and aaahhing. No wonder.
We explored little streets, walked by the river and took a day trip to Hamburg.
Funnily enough, there wasn’t much open after midnight. Everything just seemed to stop. The streets were some times eerily quiet.
One morning, as the sun was rising, we took a walk along the river. The sky was heavy with clouds. I wore a jacket. The air had a hint of winter in it. There was nobody about. The small alleyways seemed a little scary to me at that moment.
One of the most surprisingly pretty parts of the trip, was the busride I took from Lubeck to the Hamburg airport. The houses were big, the greenery was well into spring. It was just a beautiful area.
Just a few months ago, we were driving down from Norway to Spain. We decided to stop off in Lubeck for dinner. And again, the place we went to was, simply put, charming. We ate a delicious dinner we were both happy with, and again, Lubeck didn’t disappoint us. (being a vegetarian, I didn't have a lot of options its true, but what these people can do with potatoes!)
We remembered silly conversations we’d had, our first intense conversation about politics, and the funny book we read while in bed. ‘Are you made for each other?’
