Auf dem Balkon (German poem and a little translation)

NETHERLANDS | Wednesday, 21 January 2009 | Views [3621] | Comments [5]

Wo bin ich zuhause?
Und wo meine Seele?

Wo ist Liebe?
Und wo nicht?

Wenn der Wind
meine Wange streichelt

Wo bin ich dann?
Wir leben, wie wir leben.

Doch die Lieder
laengst vergangner Zeiten

die hallen wider,
sanft und warm

in der Liebe,
die wir spueren.

Translation:

Above me the blue,blue sky,
and just beneath: the city.

Where am I at home?
And where is my soul?

Where's the love?
And where not?

Breeze touches my cheek
- where am I, then?

We live
the way we live.

But the songs
of times long forgotten

resonate
warm and mellow

within the love we feel.

That's a really nice poem.

It looks like the English translation has an extra first stanza that's not in the original - what was it?

The first stanza was.. well.. I don't really know where it went to.

"Improvising" I'd say:
Oben der Himmel, blau,
und gleich darunter: Stadt.

THANK YOU!
Kai
