we wake to the sky becoming a lighter shade of gray and the promise of a sunrise to beat all. Our guides are already moving about preparing the morning coffee and tea and checking our kayaks before our early departure. Today the water is calm for us which is a welcome relief to us all following the waves and wind of yesterday. Crossing the Sea of Cortez on the first day with kayaks fully loaded for the 6 day trip proved a challenge for me the novice paddler and some others. While exciting, the question, of a possible swim was present as we pushed forward through the breaking waves and the crosswinds. Today however, we circumnavigte Danzante, the island where we ended up camping last night. With calm waters and little wind we know it will be a great day to paddle in baja. our guides treat us to a large breakfast that includes eggs, fruit, tortillas, juice and lots of salsa and beans. we eat as if there is no tomorrow. Our day of paddling takes us to two different beaches where our guide takes us on a brief nature hike to view the flora and fauna. We then venture onwards to the next beach and lunch. As the day grows later the winds pick up. This will add to the excitement of our paddle to our camp for the night. Having the boats weighted down adds to the strain yet somehow also stabilizes the craft- the sea kayaks are amazingly stable any way. Our day ends with a beautiful sunset that illuminate our campsite and throws light onto our simple life at camp. Baja illuminated is a picture that stays with one for a while.- td
