The adventures of the Mel

From the middle of BF nowhere

I write to you from a minimum security prison in the middle of BF nowhere. How do I explain this to my parents? Well, apparently I had a VERY good time. Or, in fact, the jail has been converted into a dormitory type set up for people working at Nakiska (where Andrew is now working as a sexy Ski Patrol person. I did NOT find him attractive in his gear. NOT).

When Andrew was muttering about it being a jail, I just thought he was being facetious about the isolation, but, as one of the maintenance men told me, it really was a freaking jail. Apparently you can tell because:

- you can't control the temperature of the showers in case one of your fellow inmates tries to scald you

- your bed is made of oak so you can't pick it up and throw it at somebody's head

- the windows have electric monitors on them so that if somebody breaks out an alarm goes off.

- it is completely isolated from anything at all so you can't escape into civilisation.

Silly me.

Anyway, we are sharing the place with several South Americans, mostly from Peru but a couple from Chile I think. I am pleased to report that they make me look sane and normal. They are bloody crazy!! One of them in particular is in love with Andrew and he is completely nutty. I tried to tell Andrew that he attracts insanity, but for some reason he wasn't buying it.

Haven't really done much since getting here, quality time with Snuffy, doing some work, playing Scrabulous, spending time exchanging insults in Spanish/English with the South Americans. I can ALMOST roll my rrs when I say mierda now. Awesome. The Smericans now only chuckle when I try to speak in Spanish.

Snuffy Pig has decided now that he is going to stay here for the rest of the freaking season, so it looks like I'll be exploring bits of Canada by myself. Eventually.

I haven't gone skiing yet, I've been really enjoying lazing around, and quite frankly, Nakiska isn't that big. Also, apparently they have avalanches on this side of the world. Avalanches!?! Nobody told me about those till I got here. Apparently quite a few people have died already this year. Frick. On a COMPLETELY related topic, I did get to see my first elk.

Hope that you are all well, I've posted some more photos here and on Facebook for your perusal. The views are really only spectacular, and the cold isn't that bad.

Take care, enjoy working!

Well, if that isn't the meanest thing of Andrew to say he's gonna work there for the rest of the season. Just make sure you post some photos of him in him (not sexy) get up.
Have a ski for me
