Teaching in Grade 1 has brought about numerous joys, along with countless challenges, but I think I am getting somewhere and the students are shifting into a rhythm that is First Grade. They now know that we move at a faster pace, that work needs to be completed in a certain time frame and that good quality work takes hard effort.
The children were quite taken to this mini writing unit we did on bats. I read them a story about a baby bat in search of a home for inspiration and they were hooked in - especially the boys. The theme was set, the story scaffolding laid and the main character a cool class art project. I’ll let the results speak for themselves.
Now the other night as I was leaving the school, at quite a late dark hour, I was walking down the unlit hallway I had to duck past this beautiful display as a flying creature with wide wings swooped through the hall. Part of me truly believes that it was a bat in the school looking for a home. Perhaps a case of life imitating literature?
