Taste and see that the Lord is good

Today as a special treat for Kindergarten we had watermelon for English class. ‘Why?’ you may ask.

Each week we have been learning about a new letter of the alphabet. Kindergarten learns some vocabulary words that start with the letter of the week, sing songs, colour pictures, write the letter (handwriting) and does a craft. It can get tricky at times to be creative as ideas and resources can be limited but the students are really enjoying their learning in English.

This week we are up to the letter /w/ - hence the watermelon. So this morning I went to a fruit shop with $1 in my pocket and a smile on my face anticipating the enjoyment the students will receive from this delicious fruity treat. I was able to purchase the fresh and juicy bundle all in Khmer (yay me).

I had all the students wash their hands before we went outside….even creating a little song for the occasion….and then we walked outside to the tables and sat down to eat and enjoy. Young Khmer kids are very controlled, or maybe they are not used to having a foreign teacher yet, and they ate in silence as I handed out pieces of watermelon.

Once we returned to the classroom I shared with them that watermelon is delicious and we can remember that God is good because he made this delicious food for us. Psalm 34:8a says “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” The class drew pictures of their taste treat and we prayed thanking God for watermelon.

How often do we forget God in the simple everyday things. The next time you taste that juicy steak, that subway sandwich (I'm so missing that) or even just simple watermelon thank God for what he has made, taste and witness that God is good.
