Big Small Journey Off on the adventure of my lifetime: 5 glorious months of sun and snow in South America, then the UK for further fun and frolicking.

El Campo

ARGENTINA | Tuesday, 1 April 2008 | Views [792]

I'm in this massive flat flat land, lots or horses, lots of cows, lots of chickens, ducks, turkeys, birds, toads etc, and lots of insects. Been here a week now, have a few riding lessons, helped the experienced guys train horses. Riding, catching horses, lots of mind games. The nights here are beautiful, so are the sunrises and sunsets, the colours are brilliant. Pinks, blues, yellows, oranges, all of them so bright. The stars, wow. That's all I can say.

My typical day starts at 6:30am when my alarm goes off, I get up and have a rushed breakfast of milk and corn flakes, and check in at the house at 7am to find out the plan for the day. Then I would either help out at the school (a massive shelter for exercising and training horses), or do Ricoreta (unsure about spelling, going around checking every horse and fixing cuts and stuff). I get lessons in the afternoon, sometimes.

Haven't been doing as much riding as I'd like, but last Thursday, I had the amazing pleasure of riding with the gauchos. Yes, real working gauchos. We went out to the outer bits of the farm and herded a whole heap of cows back, it was exhilirating!

There's another check-in at 12:00, then we have lunch and siesta till 2:30pm, then work till 7pm. We seem to work overtime a lot though. :P

Overall experience so far? Mixed. I love the horses, but some of them are real bitches. Riding is amazing, but I don't do it as much as I'd like. The people are good, but my spanish is poor, and communication is difficult. What I do know about them I feel a little pity, their situations aren't the best. The farm is an amazing place, but there's animal crap everywhere. I smell ALL the time. Yes.

More updates later.
