Take the Pluge for Long Life

PORTUGAL | Wednesday, 29 August 2007 | Views [1112]

We've been told tonight is special, there will be great bonfires and festivities on the beach at midnight here, it's a scene not to miss. Locals have been coming to the beach for years at midnight on August 29th, to dunk their bodies into the freezing cold ocean, 29 times. Apparently they believe they will have a long life if they participate each year in this ritual. We go down to check out the scene and sure enough, under the light of the full moon, screaming, naked locals run, streaking down the beach, and launch their bodies into the icy cold plunge and run back up the beach to their bonfires to reheat and defrost. I can only bring myself to dip my feet in, after all, I have have just pulled myself out of a deep sleep to get to the beach at midnight. I think a full body plunge would have sent me into shock. Hopefully my luck of long life is not limited now by my lack of full immersion in this crazy local event.
