Some 35 years ago Perros-Gueric decided that they should have a sculpture garden showcasing the rose granite from the quarry here. So, they invited sculptors to compete and some 18 pieces were created. Keep in mind that granite is very hard to work with. So, the pieces are quite large and don't display much detail. Therefore, it really challenges the artist to create something based on what he has to work with.
The city is currently in the process of upgrading the garden with new plantings, grass and flowers and raised beds that will highlight the sculptures. I've taken some photos of them. But my absolute favorite is “Woman With Her Dog”. Apparently, many other people really liked it too because it was sold to a local citizen who then donated it to the town and it was moved from the Sculpture Garden to the center of Perros-Guiric.
