Villa Strassburger

USA | Thursday, 30 June 2016 | Views [319]

This majestic home is a “must see” in all the guide books, so of course we went to see it. To sustain itself now, people can rent it out for marriages and other fancy affairs. As we approached it, we read a plaque that was prominently displayed. The home that stands on the property today, was built in 1907. The land that it is built on and that now surrounds it was owned by Madame Flaubert who had a farm there. If the name sounds familiar, it is because she is the mother of Gustav Flaubert the author of “Madame Bovary”. When his mother died she left the farm to him and he sold it three years later. Just can't get away from history in this country!

And by the way, the Villa is just across the street from one of the very famous Deauville racetracks. There were a bevy of people working to make the lawns look perfect because the first race of the season is in a few days
