4 Easy Ways You Can Be More Sustainably-Minded When You Travel

SPAIN | Sunday, 13 May 2018 | Views [165]

If you’ve been thinking about how you can be better to the environment and the cultures you visit when you travel, then keeping a few things in mind can go a long way toward making a difference. As travelers, we want to know that we are positively impacting our world on our journeys, and the best thing about that is that it’s often easy to travel with others and the planet in mind.

Here are 4 ways you can be a better traveler on your next trip.

1.    Choose good tours

Who you choose to have take you around to sights and how the tour company acts with the local people can greatly influence tourism in that area. It’s often worth it to take a look at which companies promote ecotourism and which are invested toward providing jobs for some of the local people. Tours can be one of the most influential aspects of travel that you can take part in, and your choices can help a community to grow in a healthy and environmentally-friendly way.

2.    Buy local

While it might be tempting to purchase products that are cheaper and made in other areas of the world, you’re not helping the local economy to grow and you are often taking business away from those who could use it. Buying souvenirs at local shops that are handmade not only helps families, but it also helps carry on traditions that have lasted hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. Before you make a quick purchase, reconsider your options and see if you can help businesses nearby.

3.    Reconsider voluntoursim

Volunteering can be a great act when it is used in the proper way. However, many travelers often don’t know when they are making good choices or if they are affecting a location negatively. The truth is that a lot people who are choosing to volunteer at orphanages might be doing harm to the children they work with or the area they want to improve. Before you think about volunteering, make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons and that you are doing more good than harm.

4.    Take a bus

Flying can be much more convenient than taking a car or a bus, but the truth is that you can end up saving the environment by choosing another form of transportation. Buses tend to take longer, but they also save on fuel and can be much better for the planet. When you have the option and the time, a bus or car can make a big difference. Carpooling or traveling with friends can often help you save money and can also contribute to helping use fewer resources over all. Before you book a flight, make sure there isn’t another form of transport you can use instead.

Being a sustainable traveler often means making small choices, but these don’t have to largely affect your travels. In fact, you might not even notice the changes that come with traveling in a more culturally conscious way. By being aware of these decisions, you can help local communities.
