Around Lake Titicaca

PERU | Wednesday, 7 Apr 2010 | Views [270]

We were lucky to get a bus from Arequipa to Puno.   It seems the demonstrations we saw yesterday in the Plaza were the bus drivers going on strike.   No buses to Lima or Cusco but Puno was spared and we had royal treatment on Cruz del Sur;... Read more >

Arequipa

PERU | Monday, 5 Apr 2010 | Views [254]

We have been here since Wednesday – or at least our luggage has been – but we didn’t see any of the sights until today.   Arequipa is a comfortable place, especially for us Coloradans.   The altitude is a little higher than Denver and the ... Read more >

Colca Canyon and Cruz del Condor

PERU | Sunday, 4 Apr 2010 | Views [415]

In retrospect we probably could have done it on our own but sometimes a tour is the easy way, even if it costs more.   We were the first to be picked up so we sat in the front of the bus.   Not only was the view better, we didn’t get vertigo ... Read more >

Mollendo and Sancturio Nacional Laguna de Mejia

PERU | Friday, 2 Apr 2010 | Views [550]

Our bus was the “earliest we have been late” and we arrived in the seaside town of Mollendo just after lunch.   Our cab driver agreed to meet us at 6:00 AM to take us to Sancturio Nacional Laguna de Mejia before we even checked into La Posada.... Read more >

Nasca

PERU | Tuesday, 30 Mar 2010 | Views [278]

The Nasca probably knew what they wanted to accomplish when they began etching lines, geometric designs and giant pictures into the desert soil.   Heck, they worked at removing the dark oxidized rock to expose the light sand from 200 BC until ... Read more >

Pisco, Paracas and Islas de Ballestas

PERU | Sunday, 28 Mar 2010 | Views [471]

The only reason to travel to Pisco is to visit the Islas de Ballestas in nearby Paracas.  Pisco is dirty, dusty and not even actually on the bus route.  Buses drop you off on the Pan American . . . unless they have forgotten you.  In that case you ... Read more >

Museum of Anthropology, Archeology and History

PERU | Friday, 26 Mar 2010 | Views [300]

The ticket office at Wong Department Store seemed like a good place to buy bus tickets but their prices were double what we expected and their bus didn’t go to Pisco but to nearby Paracas.   So we taxied directly to the Ormenos bus terminal ... Read more >

Pachacamac

PERU | Thursday, 25 Mar 2010 | Views [297]

Despite my atrocious Spanish we were able to negotiate a reasonable fare for drive to the ruins of Pachacamac and have the driver wait for us.    The 30 km trip took us along the coast and gave us a different view of the area around Lima.   ... Read more >

Lima

PERU | Wednesday, 24 Mar 2010 | Views [340]

When you are hung-over from 24 hours of sleepless travel, dehydrated and stomach queasy from airport food and are surrounded by people speaking rapidly in a language that you don’t understand it can be difficult to recall what it is you love ... Read more >

Road Trip

USA | Wednesday, 3 Mar 2010 | Views [270]

We have seen Paul and Noreen twice since we graduated from high school 45 years ago despite the fact they are one of the nicest and most interesting couples I have ever met.  Paul was always a nice guy, the Richie Cunningham of our class and like fine ... Read more >

California Condors; Worth Saving

USA | Tuesday, 2 Mar 2010 | Views [622]

California condors are making a comeback at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in northwestern Arizona and we saw most of the 30 or so captive bred adults that have been released in the area on our visit.   The cold weather (another effect of ... Read more >

Tim Mayhew, Wildlife Artist

USA | Monday, 1 Mar 2010 | Views [336]

Tim Mayhew is a wildlife artist.   And a sculptor.   And an author.   And a student of the techniques and materials of the Old Masters.   So it’s not surprising that he has been selected as ‘Artist in Residence’ at Teton National Park this ... Read more >

Yellowstone National Park

USA | Thursday, 21 Jan 2010 | Views [285]

The ranger didn’t lie when she told me that the Northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park from Cooke City was open.   But she neglected to tell me that the roads to Cooke City from Cody, Wyoming were closed.   What should have been a ... Read more >

Mission Accomplished

USA | Sunday, 11 Oct 2009 | Views [310]

We arrived home yesterday after twelve weeks on the road.  We camped most of the time but sheltered in motels when the weather got too bad.  We told people we were traveling from Colorado to Tampa via Newfoundland which is pretty much true.   All in ... Read more >
