Acadia National Park surrounds the town of Bar Harbor. The mansions are mostly gone, destroyed by fire in the late 40s. Bikers peddle the famous carriage roads, once ridden by the oh-so-rich - the land was donated by the Rockefellers - while hikers trek along the rocky shoreline.
We spent a few hours yesterday on the annual hawk watch counting the migrating raptors as they spiraled on updrafts and sailed off on their southward migration. We saw bald eagles, ospreys, sharp-shinned, coopers and broadwing hawks and a kestrel. It was the best day of the season with 133 different birds sighted. Glad to help out, plus we learned quite a bit.
