BALLATER was everything we were looking for...peace and quite and no packing or unpacking for a week. The cottage had everything we needed including underfloor heating and a sauna(which we didn't use)although I am sure after some of the mountain walks around town it would be very nice. We caught a bus down to Braemar passing Balmoral Castle which of course is closed at this time of the year.It is a beautiful village about 15 miles from Ballater and the scenery was spectacular covered in snow.Had a lovely lunch at an old hotel called Fife Arms, roaring log fire big comfy lounge etc. As it was Robbie Burns (born 25.01.1759)250th Anniversary we joined the loclas at Glenadin Hotel and had a good night. Next day was Australia Day which we spent reading by the fire and thinking of eveyone in the heat at home!! Wandered around the golf course and the rest of the area it really is a friendly village. Lunch that day was at the Alexandar Hotel great meal and which was a bouns as Colin the landlord of the cottage gave us £20 back ...he had forgotten to leave the chocolates and champagne out for our arrival ...thank you Colin for everything. Sorry we hadn't booked it for a month. INVERNESS we really only stayed here for the night as we were heading for Fort William. Not really over impressed with Inverness very dirty and lots of undesirable characters hanging around. Although our hotel was really good Macdougall Clansman Hotel. The bus trip from Inverness - Fort William was down along Loch Ness..and no she didn't make an appearance for us.We passed snow covered mountains and the Caladonian canal, Neptune Steps which is a series of locks going down a hill,it was huge. FORT WILLIAM I have vague memories as a little girl coming here.Of course Ben Nevis is loomiming in the back ground...unable to catch the ride up the mountain due to strong winds. So we went to the Ben Nevis Distillery and were given a guided tour just Peter and I.Really quite suprissed that they only have 8 employees not a big distillery compared to Glenlivet..they do in one year what Glenlivet do in a week..but still have managed to beat Chivas Regal for one of their whiskies awards. OBAN after another fantastic bus trip through the Scottish country side we arrived in Oban for a couple of days.Oban is a small picturesque coastal village with ferry access to all the smaller islands. Actually had our first really good fish and chips here. We have been so impressed with Scotland and have just enjoyed nearly everything about it.Our plan is for a mobile home trip one year in the summer time. We are now on a stop over in Carlisle and will be heading down south of England and then over to Ireland. more will follow
