Cruising the highways

USA | Friday, 18 July 2008 | Views [302]

It's been a week anda half now and we've driven nearly 1000 miles already. We've driven highway 1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco (with a detour round the forest fires in Big Sur), enjoying the wind-lashed coast. We drove into San Fran through the steep streets, just like Bullitt according to Dave, and across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down (twice). We adored the views in San Francisco and built up our leg muscles by walking in a straight line up and down the streers / hills (well it did justify the lovely food).

The last few days have been full of national parks - Muir Woods to see the magnificent, towering redwoods; Alcatraz (it's run by them so does count) to see the chillingly brooding prison; Yosemite for the lush green valleys and waterfalls; and finally Death Valley for the barren emptiness baking in the heat. It's amazing to see such variety and contrast so (comparatively) close to each other.

Next stop is Vegas, for yet another type of experience...
