I arrived on Friday evening to a Bienvenida Ani U sign on my door. I have taken the first few days to relax, re-learn the money, read my lonely planet Guatemala book and get acquainted with the city.
Slowly but surely I am finding my way around. It took me an hour to find the woman who cut my hair 3 years ago. She remembered me. I have a very nice haircut now. But I found a Dunkin Donut. Unfortanetely, Burger King, Wendy's and MacDonalds are also here.
In my home stay I have a cute private room with my own bath. Most of you would think it is rustic but I think it is clean and comfortable. My room comes with 3 meals a day cooked by Olga. Since we eat together, it is also an oppourtuniy to get to know the people living in the rooms around me. We have a garden where we get wifi. All this for $20 per day. Yesterday, I had breakfast, lunch and dinner with a bunch of women from all over the world ( 2 Canadians, 1 Belgium, 1 Israeli, and a German.) Each with a great story.
On Sundays, Olga takes her day off so I was on my own. I went into the Parque Central and got my own breakfast. I stopped by the cathedral ( see picture proof I went to church) and sat at the park to people watch. I met a very handsome Belgium writer and we chatted for two hours at the park. I think we almost figured out how to fix this world.
I returned to my wifi garden to write in my journal.
I got a couple of emails and texts asking when I was sending an update. I will take more pictures but the cobblestone streets are full of potholes and traffic. So once I am more familiar with the streets, i will go out with my camera.
Tonight I am going to dinner with a group of American expats. Lots happenning in Antgua during Lent, I will keep you posted.
