The Catlins area is at the bottom of the South Island. Although the interior is a wee bit boring, being mainly farmland with a sprinkling of really nice forests and waterfalls, the coast is absolutely stunning on a sunny day.
Miles and miles of sandy beach, perfect surfing waves and the only inhabitants around are the wild ones - sea lions puffing themselves up before having a doze, fur seals lounging on the rocks with their pups, and the rare yellow-eyed penguin chicks waiting in the beach at tea-time for their parents to bring fish from the sea.
A beauty of an area.
