Easter Long Weekend a Cottage in Tobermory

For something entirely different, this blog is being written as it happens. It’s Saturday afternoon and I’m sat here in a cottage overlooking a choppy Lake Huron.

For the Easter long weekend, we have booked a cottage near Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsular. Tobermory is a small fishing village on the very tip of the ,Bruce Peninsular, which is a 100Km spit of land that juts out into Lake Huron and is known as the Scuba diving capital of Canada because of its crystal clear waters and the number of wrecks that proliferate the shore line.

We are sharing the cottage with Pierre, Helen, Jacque and Patrick Fermier an exchange family from Gladstone in Queensland, currently residing in Orillia Canada. Also not far away are the Barnard’s and Ken and Francesca, who are all sharing another cottage.

Our weekend started early Good Friday morning with a 4 hour drive North from Burlington to Tobermory, arriving around lunch time. The cottage is a fantastic two storey 4 bedroom modern place that sits back 30 metres from the shore and is surrounded by fir trees. The view from the front deck, (there are two) is superb and we are all waiting for the weather to warm up so we can sit out there and drink. The kids have settled in, with Jacque and Patrick bringing up enough NERF guns to equip an army. The cottage also has a huge CD and DVD collection and a huge plasma TV, so the kids shouldn’t get bored.

The weather here so far has been a mixed bag with snow on the ground when we arrived, a sunny afternoon yesterday, rain overnight and overcast and cold today. After arriving yesterday we headed into Tobermory to have a look around and get our bearings, which took all of five minutes. This isn’t a big town, also being Good Friday, the girls had hoped to get some seafood, bad mistake. This is the only fishing village I have ever come across that doesn’t sell fresh fish especially on Good Friday. The reason for this is it being the off season. One of the things it’s hard to get used to as Australians, is off season and the fact that most attractions are closed outside of May to October. We are spoiled with the fact that the climate allows for things to be open all year round.

Today has been spent relaxing, with a bit of bike riding, bush walking and a trip to the National Park for a quick look. Everyone now is making plans for dinner, so I’ll sign off and update tomorrow.
