My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I have been fascinated with photography since I was old enough to hold my father’s camera. I grew up in Sri Lanka, a country of amazing scenery, archeological sites and temples – a veritable wonderland for a child interested in photography.
As I travel further afield, I am increasingly aware that we share a global heritage of extraordinary natural beauty, diverse cultures and stunning historical sites. Industry, environmental change, illegal trade and ignorance are fast destroying this heritage. I try to take photographs that express my own excitement at what I am seeing so that this will imbue the viewer with a sense of wonder and responsibility to preserve it for future generations. Photography is exciting as it allows me to communicate across boundaries of language, location and time.
I hope to make photography my career – it would take a leap of faith and sacrifice, but this I am willing to do. I’ve never had a mentor or any formal training in photography. Everything I know, I’ve taught myself. Working with Jason would be invaluable for my development. It would be the chance of a lifetime to experience life on the road as a photographer while seeing a true professional at work.
