Winaywayna, reached on the third day along the Inca trail, is a stunning Inca site consisting of residential areas, fountains, stairways and agricultural terraces. It sits on a steep slope high above the Urubamba River.

Sayacmarka was a small settlement originally built by the Colla (enemies of the Inca) and later improved by the Inca. It was strategically placed in terms of security but the absence of agricultural terraces limited the population that the town could support.

The awe-inspiring Inca citadel of Machu Picchu lies at the end of a gruelling 4-day hike along old Inca trails. Perched on top of a high mountain ridge it is invisible from the valleys below.
