    The awe-inspiring Inca citadel of Machu Picchu lies at the end of a gruelling 4-day hike along old Inca trails. Perched on top of a high mountain ridge it is invisible from the valleys below. by: wijew Views[239] Winaywayna, reached on the third day along the Inca trail, is a stunning Inca site consisting of residential areas, fountains, stairways and agricultural terraces. It sits on a steep slope high above the Urubamba River. by: wijew Views[276] Sayacmarka was a small settlement originally built by the Colla (enemies of the Inca) and later improved by the Inca. It was strategically placed in terms of security but the absence of agricultural terraces limited the population that the town could support. by: wijew Views[351] At 4215 meters, Dead Woman’s Pass is the highest point on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Trekkers reach Dead Woman’s Pass on the second day of the trek, at the end of a steep ascent. by: wijew Views[488] The Chaskis (porters) carry provisions and tents for trekkers on the Inca Trail to the lost city of Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes. The small stature of these men belies their strength – they carry loads of over 30kg and climb nimbly up and down the mountain sides at high altitude.
