Day 19 – 19th April 2016 Tuesday – Running around and waiting day

VIETNAM | Tuesday, 19 April 2016 | Views [356]

Got up early and headed off for a walk around Cam Thanh at 5.30 while Kevin went for a bike ride toward Danang. Kevin came back a couple of hours later and I then headed into town to the translator office to get my drivers licence translated to Vietnamese. Well, not a single customer service (said very loosely with you he in cheek) spoke English and so various customers were trying to help me. I had to leave and go to another shop to get 2 photocopies of my licence and then return. When I got back, again no-one wanted to help when a Vietnamese guy came in and I was told he could help me. Turns out he is a English teacher come Translator Called Dung, he told me to come with him to his house. On the scooter and off we go. He wanted me to pay VND$4.4M (A$286) for a complete drivers licence pack which gives me a VN licence for life. I just couldn't quite come at this and so asked him just to do the translation VND$250k which is well over the price Barney and others have said but to save me going to Danang I told him to proceed. Well he took my licence and told me it will take a day or so! From here I went to the Bank – VietcomBank on Hai Ba Trong to withdraw enough money from my VN account to pay the rent on our house VND$32.5M for 5 months. I also opened another account with them in A$. I quickly called into the AMart and APMart for odds. Going back down Kiet I stopped at the bike shop and bought a bicycle helmet for myself VND$240k. Got back around 11.30. Got a message from Vang that the wifi people were coming early afternoon. Spent the afternoon on the computer waiting for the wifi man who did not come. Kevin decided to go for another ride and while he was gone  Thu came to do the paperwork on the house. Vang had to come and complete the paperwork for Thu . I tried ringing Kevin to get him to come home to sign the papers but he didn't answer. Finally he turns up and I pay Thu and she takes our passports to the police for registering us as tenants. At 5pm I leave to go to Vangs as we are having dinner at her house. Kevin came later on his bike. Andrew had called around to have a look at the bamboo bike and asked Kevin to ride with him sometime. I think this is a good thing. Both Tri and Duc went for rides on the bike and said the seat was too hard. Ha ha. Tea was lovely, spring rolls for Kevin, pumpkin soup, pork & leaves and rice. Of course beer as well.
