Day 148 - 18th September 2014 Exploring Kalgoorlie

Day 148 18th September 2014 Thursday. Did a load of washing early and as it was blowing a little it dried within the hour. After breakfast I booked the SuperPit Tour online as I had not been able to get them on the phone yesterday. We headed into town to walk up Hannan St which is the main street. The town has many historic buildings from the turn of the century in 1900 and there must have been at least 20-30 hotels in town at one stage. I was taking a photo of the Ivanhoe Headframe at the museum when I turned and walked into a bench seat. Well I knee capped myself across both knees and just about collapsed from pain. After a little sit and a hankie wrapped around my bleeding knee we decided to look for dad and go to the supermarket for supplies. At lunch time I checked and topped up the air in the caravan tyres to get ready for the Nullarbor. After lunch we went to the WA Museum Kalgoorlie Boulder and wondered around the historical memorabilia that regale amazing tales from the early pioneers of the city. The history of mining in Kalgoorlie Boulder is fascinating. We went to the top of Ivanhoe Headframe which is 39m tall and it offered a Birdseye view of the Golden Mile. We then went Hannna North Tourist Mine to do the self guided tour of the historical buildings and equipment but mum was not keen to pay the entry fee. We decided to leave and went  to the Super Pit lookout. The Super Pit is a massive gorge carved into the red earth where trucks the size of houses move hundreds of tonnes of rock but appear the size of ants as they crawl up and around the mine wall. I have read that the mine is to close in 2016 and that they will look to let it fill with water and that it will take 50 years for this to occur. It was huge. I dropped mum and dad back at park and went back into town as I wanted to look at the gold detecting machines. I only had half an hour but got some prices. I also went and bought mum a birthday present. Dad had been playing around with his air compressor and has now put an Anderson plug on instead of alligator clips. I have asked him to do the same for me.
