Day 98 - 31st July 2014 Gascoyne Farm Trail

Day 98 31st July 2014 Thursday. Kevin went off for a long walk early while I did a load of washing. Then decided to try and sent the emails again to Cameron Caravans re warranty issues. It became very frustrating as the emails kept bouncing back. Appears that Camerons will need to add my email address to allow them to receive the messages. Late morning we headed off to look at the Gascoyne Farm Trail which takes you around the various horticultural outlets as well as venues with local produce in their menu. Included shops at farm/plantation gates, ice creams (mango and banana covered in chocolate), preserves, dried and frozen products. We tried the ice creams and all thought they were a little bland and not sweet enough. We stopped at the bridge over the Gascoyne River as it is considered the life blood of Carnarvon. The town and surrounding plantations get their water supplies from bores below the dry river bed. The water sits unseen below the riverbed in underground reserves protected from evaporation by the sand. Periodically the river flows visibly after heavy rains inland but unfortunately they have not had much rain in the past 3 years. We then headed to the OTC Dish, a huge communication satellite dish which was opened in 1966 but is no longer used but stands as a reminder that Carnarvon was involved in the space race and helped put man on the moon in 1969. It is also from where Australia received its first satellite television broadcast. At lunch time I decided to send the emails via gmail and they seemed to go through. Success at last. After lunch dad, mum and I headed to One Mile Jetty with the intention of throwing in a line. The jetty has a train track up the middle and was at one stage used as a port for livestock and wool to be exported to Freemantle. Unfortunately they wanted $5 each just to walk on the bloody thing and as it was 3pm and blowing a gale we were not inclined. We drop instead to the Old Pawning Jetty and threw our lines in here. Dad got 3 good sized bream, 38cm and I didn’t even get a bite. Was a challenge to get the line close to the old jetty. Chicken kiev for tea was really nice. Cards again.
