Day 45 – 7th June 2014 Saturday. Headed to Geikie Gorge for a boat cruise up the Fitzroy River. Was an interesting sight as the gorge is made of limestone and showed colour variations from white to a red rusty brown. The gorge is part of an ancient barrier reef that developed some 360 million years ago. Since the oceans receded, the Fitzroy River has gouged through the rock forming deep rippled walls that tower over the water. During the wet season the river can surge many metres. The old Fitzroy Crossing can be 26 metres under water during the wet. The gazebo at the boat cruise has water marks and the 2002 flood is 2 metres above the roof of the gazebo. The town was actually relocated to higher ground away from the River but the 2002 flood reached the town. Kevin said the cruise was better than the Catherine Gorge cruise. After the cruise we took the Bun-Gu walk to The Sandbar where the Margaret River joins the Fitzroy. We decided that after lunch we would come back and try barra fishing. Dad and I came back but only caught small throw back fish. When we got back I realised I had lost my favourite Bali hat and was saddened. Kevin meanwhile had sat and watched Port Power all afternoon as I had managed to set up Foxtel. We have not been able to get normal TV reception since Kununurra and there appears to be a problem somewhere. Later while getting tea the couple next to mum and dad came back from fishing and they had found my hat. Hurray.
